Leavenworth, WA
Distance from Seattle: ~2 hours / 120 miles
Why Go:
Fancy spending a weekend in Europe without having to shell out for a flight? Leavenworth is a must-visit Bavarian-style village nestled in the Cascade Mountains. It exudes quaint European charm, right down to its Nutcracker Museum which offers activities for the entire family, including a daily nutcracker hunt. It’s also the perfect place to enjoy a pretzel and some delicious craft beer from one of its German breweries. For the outdoor enthusiasts, summer offers plenty of hiking and camping opportunities.
The holidays are a great time to visit Leavenworth too when it turns into a winter wonderland filled with activities like dog sledding, snowshoeing and more. Make sure you have your winter tires on, and you’re good to go!

San Juan Islands
Distance from Seattle: ~3 hours (including ferry)
Why Go:
A lot of visitors to Seattle are unaware of all the tiny islands worth exploring in the area. The San Juan islands (or the San Juans as they are familiarly known) are close enough for a day trip but offer enough activities and entertainment to make it worth spending a few days there too. The main San Juan Island offers charming restaurants and shops dotted around Friday Harbour. Lopez Island is a bicycler’s paradise. The weather is mild all year round but try and pay a visit during May to October when you’ll be able to catch a good look at the Orcas.

Mount Rainier National Park
Distance from Seattle: ~2 hours / 95 miles
Why Go:
Towering over the Seattle skyline, Mount Rainier is more than just a pretty backdrop. This active stratovolcano is the centerpiece of one of the most stunning national parks in the Pacific Northwest. Visitors come year-round for alpine meadows, glacier views, old-growth forests, and some of the best hiking in the state. While parts of the park are open year-round, many of the higher-elevation areas—like Paradise and Sunrise—are best visited between late spring and early fall when roads are open and trails are clear of snow.

Need a quick escape? This half-day trip from Seattle packs a punch with towering waterfalls, mountain views, and iconic TV nostalgia. Snoqualmie Falls is a breathtaking 268-foot cascade, and nearby North Bend offers scenic hikes and small-town charm.

Portland, OR

Known for its eccentric spirit, lush parks, and food scene that punches way above its weight, this riverside city has something for everyone. Bonus: Oregon has no sales tax—so it’s a great spot for guilt-free shopping.
